How to apply Rust Shield^®

Applying Rust Shield, step by step

1. 

   01 Step 1 of 6

   Remove rust and clean the steel

   Take the corrosion back to sound metal. A wire brush, sandpaper or any suitable cleaning method will do it.

   • Remove all existing rust with a wire brush, sandpaper or emery.

   • Take off loose mill scale, flaking paint and weld spatter as well.

   • Degrease: the surface must be free from oil, grease, dust and loose particles.

   • The steel must be dry. Never coat a wet surface.

   02 Step 2 of 6

   Stir well before use

   The protective solids settle while the tin stands. Stir from the bottom until the colour and the body are even the whole way through.

   • Stir thoroughly, lifting from the bottom of the tin, every time you start.

   • Do not thin it. RUST SHIELD is direct apply — no primer needed.

   • Close the container tightly after use.

   • Work in a well-ventilated area, in goggles, mask and gloves.

   03 Step 3 of 6

   Apply using brush or roller

   An even coat straight onto the cleaned metal. The joints and the buried faces matter more than the face you can see.

   • Lay an even coat with a brush or roller — no primer first.

   • Cover the contact area between the wall and the metal frame.

   • Work the coating into welds, corners, cut ends and fixing holes.

   • Do not apply on wet surfaces or during rain.

   Allow to dry 2–3 hours

   Let the first coat dry before the second goes on. Two to three hours is the recoat window; humid weather takes the long end of it.

   • Stand the frame where air reaches every face while it dries.

   • Keep it out of rain, spray and settling dust.

   • Touch-test a hidden edge: dry, not tacky, before you recoat.

   • Do not force-dry with heat.

   2–3 hrs before the second coat

   05 Step 5 of 6

   Apply the second coat

   The second coat is what closes the barrier over the metal. Same method, same attention to the joints.

   • Same even coat, over every face the first coat reached.

   • Check welds, corners and the wall-contact area again for thin spots.

   • Do not stop at one coat — the film needs both to seal properly.

   • Close the tin tightly as soon as you are finished.

   06 Step 6 of 6

   Cure, then install

   Allow 5–8 hours for a hard dry. Install or finish the frame only once the coating has properly cured.

   • 5–8 hours for a hard dry before handling, fixing or finishing.

   • Water should run straight off the coated metal instead of clinging to it.

   • Touch up any scratch from handling before the frame is built in.

   • Store the remaining tin closed, cool, dry and out of direct sunlight.
